Sony may not have created them, but they did give 3rd parties a platform where they could make them. Nintendo used to censor a lot of crap back in the day to make it kid-friendly.
The largest subscription based one is WoW and the largest free-to-play one is Guild Wars, I think.
Oh yeah, Microsoft totally had the best conference by showing a bunch of multiplatform games and bunch of games we've already seen, rip off a bunch of Sony/Nintendo games/services, and introducing a game as MULTIPLATFORM as their biggest announcement.
